It is hard to say what I love the most about being a doula – the joy and tears on a woman’s face when she sees her baby for the first time, the friendships I’ve made, or the hugs from the dads who are so grateful I was there.
My journey to becoming a doula began with my first child. We discovered she was breech and she was delivered by cesarean section. When it came time for the second baby, we knew we wanted something different. So we decided to hire a doula and planned a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). With the help of our amazing doula we succeeded! Our third baby was also a natural vaginal birth.
In early 2009, after the birth of my second child, my sister in law asked me to help support her during her birth. It was a life-changing honor and privilege for me to be there; I knew this was my passion and what I was supposed to do. Shortly after, I completed my doula training with DONA and have been attending births ever since. I have attended approximately 75 births with first time moms, seasoned moms, vaginal births after cesarean, pre-term birth, and high risk. While I enjoy working with all moms, the VBAC mom always has a special tug at my heart because of my own personal journey.
Birth is a day a woman will never forget. How she is treated on the day of her baby’s birth will impact her for the rest of her life. It is my hope that all women remember the birth of their children with joy and a sense of confidence, and feel respected and loved throughout the process. It is my passion to be that person to pour love, respect, and care into each of the families I am privileged to attend.
